System Wide Holds - Training Guide

The purpose of this guide is to provide staff a reference resource for processing Requests and Holds on NLPL materials.

Requests & Holds

A Request and a Hold are two parts of the same process.

A Request is placed for an item by staff (using Horizon) or by a borrower (using the online catalogue), and when the Request arrives at your library (or is taken off the shelf by library staff) it is checked in to Horizon by staff, turning the Request into a Hold that is ready for pickup. The borrower then receives a notification that their Hold is ready for pickup, either by email notification (automatic) or by telephone call from library staff.

Holds are kept on the Holds Shelf for 7 days before they should be checked in to Horizon.

Why can't this request be placed?

Sometimes a request cannot be placed because the borrower is blocked from borrowing, or the borrower has already placed a maximum of 20 requests. In such situations, Horizon will provide a clear explanation.

Fines can be waived (until further notice). We cannot waive funds for Lost items. Patrons can replace the lost item or pay by cheque/money order.

Who to Contact

On occasion you may have a specific question regarding a requested item. ILL mail is still being checked but you can also email the appropriate staff directly.
