For more in-depth information, read the Horizon Guide section on Check-in.
When a requested item is checked in, Horizon will indicate that the item is requested and indicates where to place the item; if the item has been requested by another library, the message will indicate where to send the item:
Complete a Transit Slip and follow your library's local procedure for mailing items.
When you receive items in the mail, check these items in to Horizon - if the item is on Hold, the Item on Hold window will appear:
Complete a Hold Slip* and place the item on your Holds Shelf - you may need to notify the borrower by telephone that their hold is ready for pickup if they do not have email notifications turned on.
*the desired method of contact is noted in the borrower's registration information - if a patron wants to change this method of contact, you can do so by Editing a Borrower Record.
When an item is returned to your library, check it in - if it needs to be sent to another library, the following message will appear:
Complete a Transit Slip and follow your library's local procedure for mailing items.
When in doubt, check it in!
Horizon will tell you what to do with an item, whether it's on hold, requested for a System Wide Hold, or to be reshelved.
Video: Checking in an item
You should not check out an item that is on hold for a patron to another patron, but sometimes a family member or friend may have been asked to pick up a hold for a patron. If you do attempt to check out an item that is on hold to an other person, Horizon will warn you about the current hold, asking you to confirm the checkout:
Click on Yes to check the item out. Another window will appear asking you if you want to renew the request (see image below) - click No in most circumstances.
Sometimes a request/hold will have been placed on an item in your library before you run your pull list, and a patron browsing your library collection chooses to borrow that same item requested for a hold. In this case, you should loan the book to the patron in the library, and renew the request that was placed on that item by clicking Yes within that second pop-up window:
